The main buyer of our dried fish products is Nigeria. The main dryfish markets in Nigeria are located in Aba, in Abia State, and Lagos. There is a long history of trade relations between Iceland and Nigeria. By the early eighties Nigeria was the third largest importer of fish products from Iceland, following The United States and Great Britain. These sales have increased anually and total around 20 000 tonnes per annum today. Sales peak before Christmas and other celebrations but usually decrease during the rainy season, from May to September. Langa exports under the trade name LAN Dryfish.
Langa, in association with other dryfish producers in Iceland, supports the charitable project, Mission for Vision, run by the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation. This project provides free corrective eye surgery for the blind. Blindness at a young age due to cateracts and glaucoma is a common problem in Nigeria and leads to unemployment and dependency. Below is an extract from a letter of thanks received by Langa from the Tulsai Chanrai Foundation in 2014.
The Tulsi Chanrai Foundation is extremely grateful for your contribution. It is with your generosity that we can continue to do the good work of restoring sight and march forward in our resolve to eradicate curable blindness in Nigeria. With your kind support we have crossed over 90,000 surgeries throughout Nigeria. This year we will be completing 100,000 – a landmark number of surgeries.
